Black marlin, Istiompax indica, is a large pelagic teleost fish distributed from tropical to temperate oceans. This billfish species is an important target of both recreational and commercial fisheries. The distribution of black marlin is concentrated in the Indian Ocean to the southwestern Pacific and diminishes in abundance toward the northwestern Pacific. In the East China Sea, black marlin is known to migrate northward from May to September and southward after October in pursuit of schools of Scomber species.
